As I wrote in an earlier article, I believe great racing drivers are both born and made – it’s a combination of nature and nurture. For several decades, teams and manufacturers have been nurturing gifted young drivers to help them climb the motorsport ladder towards the upper echelons of Formula 1, Le Mans or IndyCar racing.
With the high costs involved in a capital intensive sport such as ours, I think it would be fair to say that several of the stars we have seen, particularly over the past three decades, would not have had the careers they ultimately did without the support of young driver programmes.
