There is no shortage of candidates, but of all the people I’ve met in this industry, there are few, if any, more extraordinary than Gordon Murray. And I don’t mean because he’s a designer of World Championship-winning Formula 1 cars, or that his brain is so fertile that for sheer inventiveness, his creativity was rivalled by Colin Chapman and probably no-one else in that industry.
It is that having done all that, then engineering the McLaren F1 (which remains today probably the most highly regarded supercar of all time), even now he is as driven as ever. Aged 75 he remains what he has always been in the 30 years I’ve known him: one of the most focussed, driven, clear-thinking, passionate, single-minded people I have ever met.
