The smoothness of the power delivery, the quiet, the effortless performance… all of it would count for nothing if the car couldn’t handle this. I’d found much to enjoy about life with an EV, but until I’d really put its range and the public charging network to the test, I couldn’t say hand on heart that I was entirely convinced.

But then came the Week of Truth. From home in Bristol to Fowey, Cornwall, for a weekend away with my family, then a couple of days later a long run up to Deeside for a meeting and home again the same day. Call it 700 miles in the space of five days – as tough a challenge as my normal everyday life is ever likely to throw at an electric car.

And you know what? It was just fine. Yes, the hotel in Cornwall had EV charging making that leg of the journey a breeze. Normally on a trip like that we’d camp, rent an apartment or house or stay with friends, in which case such convenient charging would be far less likely. But as it was, using an EV for the run down to Fowey and back was actually easier than the same journey would’ve been in a petrol or diesel car.
