Batteries are the only solution to future transport, right? Well, erm, no. First of all, there’s the obvious point that putting all your eggs in one technological basket is risky. Competition is the backbone of development and if fuel cells and e-fuels aren’t the only answer, then neither are batteries.
There’s also the key point that batteries are heavy, so when you’ve got a truck carrying heavy loads, you start with one arm in a sling if you’re carrying tonnes of lithium-ion cells to start with. Which is why every serious truck maker is looking at hydrogen fuel cells as a potential solution to long distance/heavy payload work. Same goes for trains, maritime and even short-hop air travel.
