‘Getting away with it’ in cars is more about luck than judgement in my experience – although for whatever reason, the more capers you get caught up in, the more often luck appears to fall on your side. Perhaps it’s merely the law of averages that creates this illusion as time goes by.
Whatever the truth of it, your luck will eventually run out at some point, and when it does, all you can do is hold on tight and hope you reach the other side. Which can be quite intoxicating in the moment (or, indeed, with hindsight), but is mostly just a pain in the arse. Not to mention embarrassing and, sometimes, heinously expensive.
There have been quite a few occasions on which my luck – in cars at least – has gone AWOL, but the worst of these (financially at least) involved a Jaguar XJ220, a Ferrari 512 TR and a roundabout. Yikes.
