I was on my way to drive a modified Mini Cooper S when the call came. It didn’t matter how close I was to the tuning company’s workshop, said the voice. I had to turn around and come straight back to the office. And I knew right away that the magazine for which I worked was being shut down.
Maybe the writing had been on the wall for a while. Or was it the voice and its very sombre tone that gave it away? Heartbroken, I drove back to base where my worst fears were confirmed. We lasted two years. Maybe most gutting of all was that the rug was yanked out from under us just as we were learning to walk.
