So perhaps there is something going on here that runs deeper than the obvious? Let us not forget Ford’s record in the field of high performance hatchbacks, nor the reputation of that ST badge: the Fiesta ST has been the best compact hot hatch for as long as it has existed while the current Focus ST is only second only to the Honda Civic Type R in class. It also vindicates entirely Ford’s decision not to make an RS version.
But no: the Puma ST is absolutely and exactly what you’d expect it to be, namely a car that relative to the Fiesta trades pace, feel and fun for the more user-friendly attributes of all cars in this perpetually under-achieving category. It has more cachet than a Fiesta among those who buy such cars for image, it costs quite a lot more too, but as a thing to drive there is nothing whatever its older, smaller sister has to learn from it.
So it’s lucky the raw material is so good, because I still enjoyed its fizzy three-pot motor and acrobatic balance. It’s the best crossover SUV I’ve driven, and it’s right to recognise the fact. But I should also point out it’s not much cheaper than a Focus ST, a car that’s better in every way that matters to me. Sometimes there are times when being as good as anything in your class is still not quite good enough. This is one of them.
