Earlier models have been fast, effective and even quite desirable, but never truly outstanding to drive. And this latest one? If anything, it’s a step back. The formula is so familiar you could probably guess it – 2-litre turbo engine, 306bhp, seven-speed dual clutch ‘box, front-biased for-wheel drive. The exterior chrome and fussy wheels are a bit much for my tastes, although the cabin feels upmarket and ultra-modern. Good seating position, too.
But on 19-inch wheels and without adaptive dampers the ride is clumsy, the whole car thudding and thumping along the road as though bumps are a new thing. The wheels feel like enormous dead weights at the end of each limb. The steering is mute and lifeless, only getting weightier as you shuffle through its various modes. This is a numb and remote car overall and it always feels heavy. A Golf R is supple and lithe by comparison.
I do like the way it leans a little then settles instantaneously as you tip it into a sweeping bend, feeling secure and tied down. But one very commendable dynamic trait goes only so far. The engine is responsive and it pulls cleanly, but never with any fizz. I can’t fault the dual-clutch gearbox and the four-wheel drive system gives infinite traction. There is plenty of speed in this car and some prestige in the badge, but magic? None that I could find.
