If you want to know how much the Goodwood Festival of Speed has changed over its last nearly 30 years, a look at the programme tells you much of what you need to know. The modern version is a mighty tome, big, thick and heavy enough to make you hop if you drop it on your foot.

The original is barely a pamphlet, more likely to float away on any passing breeze. In its entirety and adverts aside, it contains a welcome from Lord March, a two-page story on the history of Goodwood, a timetable, map and a page-long plug for an auction.

But within its folds is a list of the 101 runners and 32 riders whose cars and bikes would for the first time blast up the now famous hill. The soon to be notorious Lord Brocket was down to drive a Ferrari 250 MM (which I hope survived his angle-grinder attack a couple of years later), Nick Mason was in his BRM V16, Frank Sytner a Ferrari 250 GTO and Ron Dennis a McLaren M14A.
